What are the limits of knowledge accessibility and where does scientific transparency end and responsibility begin? These were the questions discussed on 23 October 2025 at Bialystok University of Technology during a meeting held as part of the <strong>Open Science Week<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>The guest of the University was <strong>Prof. Maciej \u017bylicz<\/strong>, molecular biologist and President of the <strong>Foundation for Polish Science (2005\u20132025)<\/strong>, who delivered a lecture entitled \u201cOpen Science stimulates scientific excellence?\u201d The discussion also featured <strong>Assoc. Prof. Marek Dru\u017cd\u017cel, PhD, Eng.<\/strong>, from the Faculty of Computer Science, an expert in artificial intelligence and decision support systems. The meeting was chaired by <strong>Assoc. Prof. Krzysztof Kurzyd\u0142owski, DSc, PhD, Eng.<\/strong>, Director of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering.<\/p>\n<h3>Open Science \u2013 an opportunity and a challenge<\/h3>\n<p>Prof. \u017bylicz began with a definition: Open Science is a movement that aims to make research <strong>transparent, accessible and reusable<\/strong> by other researchers and by society. \u2013 <strong>There is no doubt that this is the direction we must follow. But we need to do it wisely, because it is easy to fall into the trap of apparent openness<\/strong> \u2013 he emphasised.<br \/>\nHe pointed out that a key element of Open Science is <strong>reproducibility of results<\/strong>, i.e. the ability to verify experiments by independent research teams. \u2013 <strong>If research results are not reproducible, society stops trusting science. We must ensure credibility, because it is credibility that builds trust and funding<\/strong> \u2013 said the professor.<\/p>\n<h3>Peer review and genuine scientific excellence<\/h3>\n<p>A large part of Prof. \u017bylicz\u2019s speech was devoted to the peer-review system, which he described as an <strong>irreplaceable component of research quality<\/strong>. \u2013 <strong>Reviewing papers is like democracy \u2013 imperfect, but no better system has been invented<\/strong> \u2013 he noted. However, he added that the system requires constant oversight, avoidance of conflicts of interest and the selection of reliable reviewers.<br \/>\nThe professor also explained that <strong>scientific excellence<\/strong> is about more than just the number of publications. \u2013 <strong>It is not about hundreds of papers, but about a few outstanding achievements that truly bring something new. At the Foundation for Polish Science, we assess five, at most ten key papers \u2013 the ones that demonstrate the true value of a researcher<\/strong> \u2013 he said.<br \/>\nHe stressed that <strong>scores and journal prestige cannot replace quality. \u2013 One must not equate the value of research with the journal\u2019s name. Only 2\u20133 percent of publications in the most renowned periodicals are truly breakthrough works. Science needs courage, not repetition of patterns<\/strong> \u2013 he emphasised.<\/p>\n<h3>Collaboration and public trust<\/h3>\n<p>According to Prof. \u017bylicz, <strong>Europe is losing its scientific position to China and the United States<\/strong> because it invests too little in research and maintains overly complex funding systems for too long. \u2013 <strong>We must convince society that science is necessary and that money spent on research is an investment in the future. Otherwise, we will always be at the bottom of the ranking<\/strong> \u2013 he warned.<br \/>\nIn his opinion, one possible solution could be combining grant-based funding with direct institutional support. \u2013 <strong>Half of the funds should go to universities, and the other half through the grant system. Only then will researchers have the freedom and conditions to generate new ideas<\/strong> \u2013 he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Discussion: quality, interdisciplinarity, commercialisation<\/h3>\n<p>Later in the discussion, Assoc. Prof. <strong>Marek Dru\u017cd\u017cel<\/strong> stressed that <strong>openness in science must not come at the expense of quality<\/strong>. \u2013 <strong>It\u2019s not about thousands of publications, but about a few that change the way we think. The best discoveries emerge at the intersection of disciplines \u2013 where mathematicians, computer scientists and biologists meet<\/strong> \u2013 he said.<br \/>\nHe also highlighted the need to balance openness with the protection of intellectual property. \u2013 <strong>Let\u2019s make research results available, but not always immediately the raw data or source codes \u2013 their preparation often takes years of work<\/strong> \u2013 he explained, referring to his own experience in the commercialisation of scientific software.<\/p>\n<h3>Polish science in dialogue with the world<\/h3>\n<p>At the end, Assoc. Prof. <strong>Krzysztof Kurzyd\u0142owski<\/strong> emphasised that open science requires above all <strong>international cooperation<\/strong>. \u2013 <strong>This is the most effective way to enhance the quality and impact of research.
