Abstract
Bilbao (in the Basque Country, Spain) was an industrial city during the XX century and suffered the industrial crisis at the 80s due to its dependence on the industrial sector. Then, the Basque Government turned the 5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) into the service sector. Perhaps, the Guggenheim museum is the most known feature of this change. However, it is just the top of an iceberg. There were other changes underlying who completed this transformation and revolution in Bilbao. One of these changes was the construction of Metro Bilbao (the underground transport system along the metropolitan area of Bilbao). Apart from the transport service it provides, its architecture and aesthetic, designed by Sir Norman Foster, is also a part of the radical change. In this conference, the revolution that supposed the construction of the Metro Bilbao is exposed, highlighting its contribution to the change of the atmosphere in Bilbao, the aesthetic designed by Foster, the construction techniques and the main challenges that were faced during the construction.
